Sustainability and the Science Museum online shop
The Science Museum Group has put sustainability at the heart of our work, committing to reducing our environmental impact so that we achieve a rigorous net zero target by 2033. You can read more about our approach, the actions we have already taken and our Sustainability Policy on our website.
Our online shop is committed to environmental sustainability and responsible sourcing.
We aim to increase the number of recycled, reusable, fair trade and locally made products in our ranges and are encouraging our suppliers to be more sustainable. We have reduced the number of plastic toys in our shops, and introduced new toy ranges made from recycled plastic, wood and cardboard. Items sent from suppliers to our museums are also shipped by sea wherever possible.
We have removed single-use plastic drinks bottles from our shops, replacing them with glass and we provide a range of re-usable shopping bags made from cotton and 100% recycled plastic.
As part of our sustainability work on Science Museum branded products:
- Our adult t-shirts and sweatshirts are made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton. They are Fair Wear Foundation certified and PETA-approved vegan. We are in the process of switching our cotton kitchen textiles to organic cotton.
- Our Christmas jumpers are made from 80% recycled fibres and our fleeces are made from 100% recycled plastic.
- Our plush toys are filled with recycled fibres.
- Only RSPO certified sustainable palm oil is used in our food products.
- Our postcards, prints and posters are made from FSC-certified cardboard.
We know there is a lot more work to be done, and we regularly review our approach. If you have any feedback or recommendations please get in touch at info@sciencemuseumgroup.ac.uk
