The science behind it: the two substances inside the lamp must be very close in density but insoluble with each other. As the denser of the two substances, in this case the wax, is heated by the lightbulb, it expands and becomes lighter, causing it to float to the top of the lamp.
Once at the top, the wax cools down and becomes denser again: it then sinks, ready to begin the cycle again. Because the density changes are subtle and heat dissipation is a slow process, the motion happens slowly.

I've had a couple of underwhelming experiences with previous lava lamps but decided to give this one a try after seeing it operating in the Science Museum shop. I am absolutely delighted with it. Without a doubt, it's the most captivating lava lamp I've ever seen. The instructions stated that it might take 3-5 hrs to warm up on first use, but it was working fantastically within 1.5 hrs and just got better and better. It does exactly what a lava lamp should do, and for a decent price. The lovely rainbow colours are a great bonus as well. I know my kids will love watching it.
