The science behind it: the two substances inside the lamp must be very close in density but insoluble with each other. As the denser of the two substances, in this case the wax, is heated by the lightbulb, it expands and becomes lighter, causing it to float to the top of the lamp.
Once at the top, the wax cools down and becomes denser again: it then sinks, ready to begin the cycle again. Because the density changes are subtle and heat dissipation is a slow process, the motion happens slowly.
