Drawing, dated July 1830, of a steam 'locomotion engine' designed by Robert Stephenson (1803-1859), possibly for the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway. The Canterbury and Whitstable Railway opened on 4 May 1830. Most of its 6 mile route consisted of inclined planes worked by stationary engines, but there was a 1 1/4 mile stretch of level track at Whitstable on which Stephenson's locomotive 'Invicta' operated, making it the first steam train to regularly carry passengers anywhere in the world.
