Oil painting by James Wilson Carmichael (1800-1868), showing two women in foreground and cattle passing along the London Road beneath the viaduct on the Hastings branch of the London & Brighton Railway. Carmichael was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and began his career by painting local industrial scenes. In 1838 he published a set of engravings entitled 'Newcastle and Carlisle Railway'. When in 1840 he moved to Brighton he painted the Brighton Viaduct twice, and both paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1848.
